Caen-la-Mer’s DHC network to be extended by almost 70 kilometers

On Thursday 6 July 2023, the community council of Caen-la-Mer (Calvados) voted to set up a Société d’économie mixte à opération unique or SemOp, (an institutionalized public-private partnership typically established for a dedicated mission), to develop the Caen Nord district heating network. In concrete terms, the network is to be extended by almost 70 kilometres by 2030.

The network extension will require increased efforts on the supply side and a feasibility study has projected that the extended network will require a heat generation capacity of 270 GWh. Marc Lecerf, vice-president in charge of energy in Caen-la-Mer, expresses that 235 GWh of the added capacity will come from renewable and recovered energy.

The project will require substantial investments on the network-infrastructure side and the council has expressed that there will be a demand for 206 heat-exchange substations along with pipework to La Pierre-Heuzé, the Clémenceau district, and Le Chemin-Vert.

According to Ouest France, the SemOp that will develop and operate the network for the coming 25 years won the tender against bids from both Coriance and an Engie-Viria consortium.

DHC in Toul – Construction expected to start in September

The town of Toul has awarded ENGIE Solutions a 25-year contract to design, build and operate the new DHC network in Toul through the intermediary TOUL Energie. The 11.6-kilometre network is projected to operational in September 2024 and will supply renewable heat to an equivalent of 2400 homes, with the possibility of future connections.

In a communication statement, Engie has outlined that the network will be supplied by a nearby biomass heating plant. The statement outlines that the plant will be powered by wood coming from the nearby region; no less than 120 km from Toul.

While the precise start date of the construction was not announced at the launching ceremony on Tuesday 20 June, the month of September has been brought forward as a likely start date by the town’s first deputy Mayor Olivier Heyob.

16 MEUR directed to extend the DHC Network in Mayenne

On Thursday 22 June 2023, the Mayenne town council authorised the mayor to sign a public service delegation contract with Engie Solutions to extend the town’s DHC network. The current network already supplies heat to the town’s hospital, and with the planned extension in place, the whole town of Mayenne will be covered.

The project has been estimated to cost 16 MEUR, with a construction phase lasting ten months. Following the construction, the town has signed a public service contract with Engie, who will oversee the production, transport, and distribution of heat to the connected buildings. According to Ouest France, the heat supply will consist of 90% wood and 10% natural gas.
