Over the past 10 years, France has seen a steady growth in the use of heat pumps, although large-scale heat pumps and heat pumps connected to district heating networks continue to represent a very small proportion of installations.
The French government has set high climate objectives for renewable energies and introduced policies to promote the ecological transition. For instance, 38% of France’s final heat consumption should be generated by renewable sources by 2030. To support the ecological transition, several financial incentives have been put in place by the government to promote the commercial use of heat pumps.

Decarbonisation targets, demand for cooling, low electricity prices and a search for increased system efficiency are the main drivers of market developments. Key challenges primarily concern economic feasibility and high temperatures in existing networks. Nevertheless, there are multiple networks in France implementing heat pumps with innovative technologies and energy sources.
The challenges French operators face when implementing heat pumps present untapped business opportunities for local and international companies within the industry. Given Sweden’s history and extensive experience in designing and implementing heat pump solutions, Swedish companies are in a unique position to leverage competencies and grow on the French market.
