Study Tour to Southern Sweden

District Energy Futures: Competitive Heating & Cooling in a New Energy Era, 6-8 October 2026, Lund & Helsingborg

The Swedish Energy Agency and the Sustainable Heating and Cooling by Sweden platform, in collaboration with SweHeat & Cooling and Business Sweden, have the pleasure of welcoming you to a study tour in the cities Lund and Helsingborg on 6-8 October 2026.

Join us to explore how Sweden’s leading strategies and best practices in heating and cooling are advancing resilient, future ready, and competitive district energy systems, new business models, and cutting-edge innovations.

Background

Sweden stands as a global leader in the transition to fossil‑free heating and cooling. Today, around 98% of the heating market is supplied by renewable and recycled energy sources, contributing to strong energy security and limited dependence on imported fuels such as gas. Almost all individual oil (and gas) boilers have been replaced by district heating or heat pumps. District heating supplies nearly 60% of the market and operates in a deregulated environment in terms of pricing and ownership, with no mandatory connection requirements. This market-based setup enabled a first transition away from imported fuels and now supports a second transition, with a growing focus on reuse of waste heat.

What to expect

  • Interactive discussions, expert presentations and site visits to leading district heating operators in Southern Sweden
  • Practical insights into policy, investment philosophies, pricing tariffs and business models
  • Meet district heating companies that have successfully competed with heat pumps for decades and are now deploying leading solutions on the market, including waste heat reuse, digital customer integration, heat storage, 4GDH, 5GDHC, and predictive maintenance technologies
  • The detailed programme will be published by the end of May

Practicalities

  • Participation fee will be cost-based, incl. hotel, meals, conference and on-site logistics (Lund and Helsingborg)
